I just wanted to let you know about a great new book that has just been published: A Dog Lover’s Guide to Canine Massage, by Jody Chiquoine (RN, MSN, FNP, CCRT) and Linda Jackson (Lic.Ac, MacOM, MEd). This is a useful workbook designed for all dog lovers, as well as professionals, and dogs of all ages, sizes, and conditions. It is fully illustrated with photographs and diagrams, and provides a really good, solid foundation in canine massage technique. I tried it on my 9-year-old standard poodle, Crispin, and he loved it--it left him so relaxed.

A Dog Lover’s Guide to Canine Massage is available from its website ( http://www.caninemassagebook.com ), bookstores, pet shops, veterinarians, pet groomers, and directly from the publisher. If you are interested in bulk discounts or consignment orders, please contact Satya House Publications ( http://www.satyahouse.com/index.htm ) for details.Kestrelnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7087502162001538585.post-32240957767522428792009-07-15T16:32:11.113-07:002009-07-15T16:32:11.113-07:00A great blog from a lovely lady. I have talked with holistic vets who use diluted essential oils on cats successfully and an aromatherapist who works for the Denver Zoo. All this research can be found at: http://www.optimumchoices.com/animals_essential_oils.htm

According to the above sources the following substances are known to be toxic to cats and should be avoided: beta-carotene, morphine, certain sulfanomides, salicylic acid (Aspirin), acetaminophen (Tylenol), allyl propyl disulfide (onions) and compounds with the bezene ring (benzyl alcohol preservative). methyl salicylate (birch, wintergreen), phenols (oregano, thyme, cinnamon (cassia), clove, savory, birch and melaleuca (Tea Tree oil)), ketones (sage), monoterpene hydrocarbons pinene and limonene (most commonly found in the citrus and pine oils: lemon, orange, tangerine, mandarin, grapefruit, lime, bergamot, pine, spruce, and any fir oil). I leave it up to the reader to decide whether to use other essential oils not contained in this generally accepted DO NOT use list.

Please state your sources for making the all-encompassing statement that cats cannot metabolize ANY essential oils so we may all learn.RLouieHWCnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7087502162001538585.post-72656830292852371052009-05-20T15:17:15.674-07:002009-05-20T15:17:15.674-07:00With all due respect, please don't ever use any es...With all due respect, please don't ever use any essential oil, including the "benign" ones mentioned in the article, on your cat. Alfalfa is the least expensive, and probably the healthiest for your crew. You can also purchase oat grass seeds at most pet shops and sprout them yourself.

There are also several online companies that offer alfalfa seeds in bulk for sprouting. It takes a bit of work, and there are many spendy methods out there.

I grow my own sprouts in a sprouting jar, and I use a brown 1 quart jar, but any 1 quart jar will do. There is a lot of information on the Net for sprouting your own, and if you don't want to spend the money for a screen top for your jar; you can use cheesecloth for the top of the jar. You will need a canning rim for holding the cheesecloth on, but it is really a breeze to grow your own; and a lot less expensive these days with the prices of sprouts in the stores. Bless you and yours, be they two or four-legged. Hope this helped you. Let me know how everything comes out.
